The FIS English Debate Team Excels in the UNSDG Debating Competition

23 February 2026

The spirit of critical thinking and collaboration shone bright a few weeks ago as our school’s  junior debate team celebrated a clear victory in Round 1 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals Debating Competition (UNSDGC). The juniors fought against a team from Po Leung Kuk Choi Kai Yau School, while the Seniors debated against Kellett School. Both of our teams made a great impact on the judges with their strong rebutting skills, strong and confident speeches, and their exemplary teamwork.

A Challenging Competition to Address Real-World Issues

The UNSDG competition challenges students to consider and debate on interesting and quite unique motions with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals encouraging thoughtful discussion on these real-life issues. This year’s first round motion for the Juniors was “Handwriting is better for learning than typing”, while the Seniors debated on the motion “Teens screen-time should be monitored”. These sparked intense debate but our teams rose to the challenge with well researched points and compelling rebuttals. Their clear structure, calm demeanor and creative perspectives earned them both well-deserved wins.

Victorious Teams, Hard Work Pays Off

Our winning teams consisted of, for the Juniors: Junior Captain Kiaan M. (Y8B), Michael T. (Y8A) and Vivaan S. (Y9B), while the Senior team consisted of Senior Captain Rose L. (Y12A), External Secretary Maelie B. (Y12A), and Internal Secretary Jacqueline L. (Y11A). The victorious teams dedicated their time to many practice sessions and hours of research, as well as mock debates that helped refine their speeches and strengthen their unity as a team.

Next Step: Round 2

Looking at the near future, the teams are now preparing for Round 2, where competition is expected to heat up. This victory marks a proud moment for our school’s debate team and an inspiration for all other students who would like to use their voices to make a difference. Congratulations to our amazing debaters - and best of luck for their next round.
