FIS Primary Athletes in Action: How We Compete, Train & Grow

30 April 2026

At FIS, we are proud to offer our students a wide range of sporting opportunities to showcase their talents. Within the Primary P.E. Department, we provide students with opportunities to participate in competitive sports while supporting the development of skills across a broad range of individual and team sports. This is done through our engagement in the Hong Kong Primary Schools Sports Association.

The HKPSSA at FIS Primary

The Hong Kong Primary Schools Sports Association (HKPSSA) is an international school organisation dedicated to hosting inter-school tournaments and competitions. It provides students with valuable opportunities to participate in a wide range of sports in a competitive environment.

How Does it Work?

Competitions are structured on a termly basis, with specific sports scheduled for each term. We are registered as two schools, FIS Kowloon and FIS Island. Both school teams get to compete on their side of the competition dates (Island and Kowloon), then there is a Championship competition that is held with all schools invited.

This program fosters not only sporting excellence but also personal development, discipline, and sportsmanship among primary students. Providing an opportunity for students to show school spirit and pride to be an FIS athlete.

How are Students Selected?

Student participation begins with selection for extracurricular activity (ECA) sports teams, where they receive specialised training from the school's physical education staff. This training focuses on developing key technical skills, tactical understanding, and teamwork to prepare them effectively for inter-school competitions.

Selection for these teams is based on:

  • Athletic ability
  • Conduct and behaviour
  • Commitment to training sessions

Some additional training spots are released as part of the ECA programme to help students gain experience in these sports. These are registered through the normal ECA channels.

How are Competitions and Tournaments Communicated?

If your child is selected to participate in a competition, a letter will be sent home from the P.E. Department, detailing the fixture, and requesting permission for attendance. This letter will provide any logistical information, as some fixtures operate outside of the normal school hours. The return of the sign-up letter is compulsory to ensure we have all the necessary paperwork to register the team.

FIS Sports Teams 2025/26

It has been a busy year already in the FIS Sports Teams, with participation in over 20 competitions and friendlies across Hong Kong. Here's a photo gallery:

The HKSSF at FIS Primary

In addition to the HKPSSA, we are a member of the Hong Kong School Sports Federation (HKSSF), which includes local schools registered to compete in larger-scale events organised into regional competitions.

This Federation is not our primary focus for school teams' sporting events; however, we register with this organisation to offer greater opportunities to students excelling in individual sports such as fencing, tennis, and swimming. To participate in HKSSF events, parents must contact the Physical Education department for permission, which will facilitate the necessary administrative arrangements.

How are students selected to compete in HKSSF?

As this organisation is not designed for large-scale participation, PE staff are not actively involved in the events. Selection for these events operates on a first-come, first-served basis when registration for the event is opened by the HKSSF. Parents accompany students to these tournaments, which operate across Hong Kong throughout the academic year. FIS staff do not supervise these events.

Student participation and awards across sports are celebrated within the FIS community through various channels, including in-class sharing, vie scolaire signposting, and le bulletin. Look out for future posts from us as we celebrate our students!
