Importance of seasonal Influenza Prevention

9 October 2025

Influenza, or the flu, is a common respiratory illness that can affect people of all ages. While most cases of the flu are mild, taking steps to prevent its spread is essential to maintain a healthy and productive environment for everyone. Simple preventive measures can make a big difference in reducing the chance of getting sick and protecting our community.

Why Preventing Influenza Matters

1. Staying Healthy

Preventing the flu helps keep everyone feeling their best. By practicing healthy habits, we can reduce the risk of catching or spreading the virus, allowing students and families to stay active and engaged in daily activities.

2. Avoiding Disruptions

The flu can cause missed school or workdays, which can interrupt learning and routines. Prevention helps ensure that students can participate fully in their education and activities.

3. Supporting Community Health

When we practice good prevention habits, we’re not just protecting ourselves – we’re also helping others around us, especially those who may be more vulnerable to illness.

Simple Tips for Influenza Prevention

1. Get Vaccinated

Flu vaccines are one of the most effective ways to prevent influenza.

  • Hong Kong provides free influenza vaccinations for persons under 18 years old, making it easy for families to access this important protection.
  • Vaccination reduces the risk of getting the flu and helps protect those who may be more vulnerable.

2. Practice Good Hygiene

  • Wash Hands Regularly: Use soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially before eating, after using the restroom, or after coughing or sneezing.
  • Use Hand Sanitizers: Alcohol-based hand sanitizers are a great alternative when handwashing isn’t possible.

3. Avoid Touching Your Face

The flu virus can enter the body through the eyes, nose, and mouth. Avoid touching your face to reduce the risk of infection.

4. Cover Coughs and Sneezes

Encourage children to cover their mouth and nose with a tissue or their elbow when coughing or sneezing to keep germs from spreading.

5. Stay Home if Feeling Unwell

If someone is experiencing flu-like symptoms such as fever, coughing, or fatigue, it’s a good idea to rest at home. This allows for recovery and reduces the risk of spreading illness to others.
