Intercultural celebrations at FIS World Languages departments!

5 February 2025

Día de la Hispanidad

This term, World Languages students across both streams were busy celebrating interculturalism! In October, Y7 and Y8 students across both streams actively celebrated some important Hispanic events. To mark the Día de la Hispanidad or Hispanic Day (12th October), Y12 IB students led a carousel of lively activities to teach their younger peers about this historic day. Students enjoyed learning about hispanic countries and its culture.

Día de Muertos

Y7 and collège students had a great deal of fun celebrating the famous Día de Muertos or All Saint’s Day (28th October to 2nd November) with creative offerings boxes symbolising middle school. Traditionally, vibrant colours, sugar skulls, and elaborate altars filled with symbolic objects give life to this unique Día de Muertos celebration. Through food, music, and shared customs; the main goal is to preserve the memory of the deceased, inviting them to temporarily return to the world of the living to share offerings prepared in their honour. This event not only honours past traditions but also strengthens the sense of belonging and community. Inspired by this tradition and within the unit of ‘adaptability’, Y7 and collège Spanish students created an altar to express things that are important to them, such as school, favourite sports and friends and honour them.

Semaine LFM

During #semaineLFM (Semaine des Lycées Français du monde), FIS students worked on idiomatic expressions around food in FLSco and Spanish classes. They used drawing as a universal language to illustrate the idea of each expression. The goal was to work on interculturality through language.

Spanish Departments across both streams are committed to delivering academic excellence based on a multilingual and multicultural education. All our projects strive to promote international mindedness, fostering inclusive learning environments that value diverse languages and cultures.

Weihnachtsmarkt

Just before the Christmas holidays, German and French departments came together to put on an amazing “Marché de Noël” or a Weihnachtsmarkt . The Christmas market in BPR was a wonderful success, bringing together students across both streams and in all languages in a festive atmosphere. The students had an amazing time showcasing their creativity, playing games, learning about traditional German cakes, singing karaoke in Mandarin, and playing Pictionary in Spanish. They even had a passport to get from event to event. The smiles and laughter shared throughout the event truly captured the magic of the season. A heartfelt thank-you goes out to everyone who participated, contributed, and supported the market—your involvement made this event unforgettable!

Letters in Spanish from students of Lycée Descartes in Phnom Penh

At TKO, collège students received their Christmas present early in the form of a letter in Spanish from the students of Lycée Descartes in Phnom Penh. During the week before the holidays, the students wrote their response in the form of a Christmas greeting letter, which the Phnom Penh students received during the week of back-to-school (in Spanish-speaking countries, gifts arrive with the Three Wise Men on 6th January).
