Students of Seconde & Première SIA BFI enjoyed the musical production : Gen Last

20 March 2025

All SECONDE students and students of PREMIERE SIA BFI were treated to an inspiring outing to the original musical production Gen Last. This powerful performance, written and directed by the talented Lindsey McAlister, founder of the Hong Kong Youth Arts Foundation (HKYAF), showcased the incredible talents of local youth – all performers were aged 7-25 - while exploring themes of optimism and empowerment.

Set in the year 2055, Gen Last tells the story of the "Crystal Children," a group of extraordinary young people from around the globe who unite to tackle the pressing consequences of climate change. With a determination to coexist harmoniously with nature, the protagonists remind us of the power of optimism and resilience.

The students were captivated by the dynamic performances and the poignant message at the heart of the musical. This outing was not just a chance to enjoy a remarkable show, but also an opportunity to reflect on the importance of environmental issues and collective action.

A musical that invites students to rethink of their role in creating a more sustainable future

The outing to Gen Last was particularly relevant given the themes that SECONDE students were exploring in English during that particular period, specifically the axes "Generations Living Together" and "Imagining Possible Futures." These themes encourage students to reflect on the importance of community and collaboration across different ages, as well as to envision innovative solutions for the challenges that lie ahead. By attending the musical, students were able to see these concepts in action. The performance not only reinforced our classroom discussions but also inspired students to think critically about their role in shaping a sustainable and inclusive future for all generations.

The outing to Gen Last served as a crucial stepping stone for two pedagogical projects for our classes of Seconde

Two pedagogical projects were designed to deepen students' engagement with the themes explored in the musical and in class. First, a panel discussion was organized, focusing on topics such as the role of technology, community resilience, and intergenerational collaboration. Additionally, students undertook a creative project, where they were tasked with imagining the characteristics and challenges faced by either the NEXT GENERATION or the LAST GENERATION on Earth. This exercise encouraged them to think critically and creatively about the future, fostering a deeper understanding of their responsibilities as global citizens while allowing them to express their ideas creatively.

When utopia meets dystopia for students of 1ere SIA BFI - A Picnic on the HK Foreshore followed a Cautionary performance of Gen Last.

The outing began with excitement as students gathered at the foreshore, their spirits high in anticipation of a live theatrical experience. The picturesque setting, with the shimmering lights of Hong Kong’s skyline reflecting on the harbor, provided a stunning backdrop for a delightful picnic. As the students spread their blankets, laughter and conversation filled the air, creating an atmosphere of camaraderie and joy. Before the curtain rose on Gen Last, students shared their favorite snacks and bonded over their love for literature and the arts.

As the audience settled into their seats, the anticipation heightened as Gen Last unfolded as a powerful narrative that resonated with themes of resilience and hope. The production highlighted the importance of optimism in the face of challenges. The audience found themselves uplifted by the characters’ journeys, realizing that empowerment often comes from within and that the collective strength of a community can drive change.

This experience was a memorable highlight of the year, leaving our students inspired to embrace their role in shaping the future. Thank you to all the English teachers of Seconde and to Mrs. Rowley’s for her BFI English literature class who organized this impactful event!
