OneFIS: Schoolwide

27 FIS students from 8-17 yo, from both streams, sailing together

26 November 2024

A cross-stream, cross-campus and cross-generational sailing relay race to support charities

On October 19 and 20, 27 students from FIS participated in the Hebe Haven 24 Hour Charity Dinghy Race 2024, held at the Hebe Haven Yacht Club in Sai Kung. The students, coming from both the French and international programs, were aged 8 to 17 and represented three campuses: BPR, TKO, and JL.

As the name suggests, this event is a 24-hour sailing race that started on Saturday at noon and ended on Sunday at noon. The goal for each team was to complete as many laps as possible during these 24 hours non-stop. A total of 35 boats participated.

We organised the students into teams of two, taking turns every two hours, both day and night. This offered some students a chance to experience night sailing for the first time (unfortunately, night sailing in this area is often very slow due to light winds). The FIS team consisted of two dinghies: an RS Feva and a Laser Pico. The conditions were quite light throughout the 24 hours, despite forecasts predicting strong winds during the night. The event also allowed less experienced team members to join some of Hong Kong's best sailors to gain racing experience.

FIS raised over $16,000 and achieved three podium finishes

The charities chosen by the organisers included the Children's Cancer Foundation and Sailability (which enables people with disabilities to access sports). In total, FIS raised over $16,000 and achieved three podium finishes after a fierce battle against the Hebe Haven YC Dragons, HK Academy, HKIS, KGV, RCHK, and adult teams.

Podium results achieved by FIS Student teams

  • 1st overall in the Laser Pico (Fusion) division ( with 14 laps ahead of the second boat)
  • 2nd and 3rd in the Interschool Challenge Cup
  • 4th overall in the RS Feva division

In total, FIS completed 153 laps across both divisions. (The final count will take into account the amounts of donations.) The results will be confirmed during the cheque presentation one month after the event.

Although not all the participants were able to be present, three of us have been congratulated on behalf of the entire team by our Secondary Principals, Mrs. Coupat and Mr. Williams.

We would like to thank all the parents who supported the team during the 24 hours and all the young sailors who contributed to these results and represented the school:
