Sesame to the slam: a poetic adventure with Maras

27 April 2026

o mark Francophonie Week, slam poet Maras – vice-world champion and French champion of freestyle rap – led workshops for students in both the French and international streams, offering a fun and engaging way to work on the French language. From March 2 to 6, students discovered slam, a form of poetry that is rhythmically chanted and declaimed. Maras quickly built a genuine connection with the students: his friendly manner and attentive listening instantly created an atmosphere of trust. Thanks to his infectious energy, he successfully passed on his passion for poetry and eloquence, the beauty of words, and the power of performance.

For two hours, students in 6e and 5e FLSco as well as Year 8, 9 and 12 took part in compliment battles – a demanding rhetorical exercise. Meanwhile, 3e students worked on curriculum language points through writing and performing slam for three hours straight. Every single student found inspiration to write, lifted by the workshop, and the energy to perform their own piece.

On Wednesday, March 5, Maras and students from the 5e choir performed two of the artist's slam pieces at the Francophonie opening ceremony.

The week came to a close with a concert on Friday, March 6, at the TKO auditorium. About twenty students – even the most hesitant – dared to take the stage to present their creations. Finally, Maras also gave a performance of his own, showcasing his sensitivity and commitment by blending improvisation, poetry, and audience interaction.

This week was marked by moments of exchange and creativity, bringing enthusiasm and smiles to the students' faces. Thanks to this unforgettable poetic adventure, everyone leaves enriched, inspired, and perhaps even ready to continue their journey into the world of slam and poetry.
