The Art of Public Speaking with Mad Maths

1 April 2026

Because learning doesn't stay in silos, we are proud to look back at "The Art of Public Speaking with Mad Maths" — a project that brought together students from 3ème, 1ère, and Terminale.

Not to solve equations. But to learn how to structure an argument, connect with emotions, and master non-verbal communication.

Led by our Mathematics department and shared with the French International School of Shanghai and Singapore, this cross-disciplinary initiative was all about preparing our students for their future oral exams and beyond.

A challenging yet formative experience

Our students had to work in groups to improve their public speaking skills, in a very short amount of time. It was a challenging exercise, but deeply formative. Learning to think on their feet, collaborate under pressure, and present with confidence: these are skills that will serve them long after the classroom.

Going further with La Compagnie du Chemin Ordinaire

As part of this project, La Compagnie du Chemin Ordinaire proposed several exciting opportunities to our community:

Two Shows for Our Community

Mad Maths – A duo of seriously wacky teachers presented their scholarly theories on zero, infinity, PVC pipes, and the importance of animals in the new numeration. A cast that was both feminine and masculine. Three performances took place during school hours for our Middle and High School students.

Un Frère – A free community show that welcomed our families to discover the story of Maxime and Émile, two teenagers from opposite worlds, united by a powerful friendship that helped them navigate the trials of culinary school. From a roadside diner to Michelin-starred kitchens, through Italy and the stands of a stadium, audiences followed their 20-year journey of passion, nostalgia, laughter, and tears.

 Teacher Training

Volunteer teachers participated in a training session on "Non-verbal tools and how to transmit them to the class" — helping them bring public speaking skills back into their own classrooms.

From students to teachers, from the classroom to the stage: this was a truly transversal project for the whole FIS community.
