4 December 2024

Like high school graduates rushing towards their results, our young middle school students gathered with excitement and apprehension in front of the CDI panels to see all these texts displayed: those of their classmates that they discovered, and their own that they proudly read again.

These texts, sometimes stained with (blood) red or accompanied by symbols of horror, are those composed at the end of last October by our students from both streams for the writing contest on the theme of Halloween organized by the Librarians of Blue Pool Road and Tseung Kwan O.

The prompt: Write a short 7-line story that is scary. Each sentence must start with one of the 7 letters of the word "DRACULA".

The students participated voluntarily or with their class, either through their French teacher for the students of 6ème or their English teacher for the ones in 4ème.

All the winners received a notebook and a pen; a gift that will hopefully encourage them to continue writing.

At BPR, we had around 60 participants in total

5 categories were defined, and here is the list of the happy winners in each of them.

  • 1/ 6ème French Class Award : Mirai DURANTES - 6C

  • 3/ French Stream Volunteer Award in French : Scarlett HEALEY - 4C
  • 4/ Both Stream Volunteer Award in English : Lim LAVENDER - Y7B

Fostering creativity and a passion for writing

By encouraging the development of creativity and a love for writing through engaging and enjoyable contests and themes, we provide our young middle school students with a valuable opportunity for exploration and personal expression. These literary competitions, rooted in playful themes, aim to nurture students' imagination, enhance their language skills, and encourage them to share their thoughts and creativity in a free and authentic manner. Through this exercise, they also build their confidence and self-esteem, with their writings publicly displayed and, in some cases, proudly rewarded.
